1918年(1916年という記載あり)3月6日ヴァージニア州リッチモンド(ヘイネスヴィルという記載あり)生まれ。
1992年3月8日カリフォルニア州ソウガスにて死去。
30〜40年代にかけてルイ・アームストロングやレスター・ヤング、エロール・ガーナ―達と共演。
50年代に入ってからは、ロスアンゼルスに定住し西海岸、ジャズ界の長老として多くのミュージシャンから尊敬を集めた。
1938年のルイ・アームストロングの録音に名前が見える。
